Captain Charles Henry Farmer
Charles Henry Farmer was born on 7 September 1900 at 8 Chester Road, Rathmines, Dublin, the last of three children of dental assistant Charles Henry Farmer and his wife Charlotte Kathleen (née Disney). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living with his parents and sisters at 16 Annesley Park, Rathmines, Dublin.
Farmer enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 14 and 27 September 1918, soon after his eighteenth birthday (Corps of Hussars No.72152). He probably served at the regimental reserve depot at Antrim until demobilised in mid-1919.
After the war Farmer returned to his home in Dublin and worked as a bank official with the Bank of Ireland. On 1 September 1927 he married barrister's daughter Joan Georgina Margaret Ellen Russell-Strich at the Church of Ireland Holy Trinity Church, Rathmines.
Soon after the outbreak of World War 2, Farmer was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the Royal Army Pay Corps (No.131388). He served in the Netherlands East Indies, rising the the rank of captain, before being made a prisoner of war of the Japanese in 1942. He was held at camps in Borneo until released in 1945.
Farmer died in London in 1970.
